Dear Sally!

Since we last met I have been working with a number of leading entrepreneurs on the next two events in the series of  Keynotes Legal Seminars, a series of events aimed at assisting growing companies.  In April Keynotes will be looking at Crowdfunding and in May we'll focus on Green Businesses.  As a personal contact of mine you and your network would be very welcome to join us.  We make a small charge to cover some of our costs, but if you quote "Keystone2010" you will receive a 50% discount.  Full details are below.  I am sending you this email as I think you or those you know might like to attend one of these seminars or hear of future seminars.  If you would prefer not to be invited to Keynotes Seminars then please reply and I will not mention them to you again, otherwise I hope to hear from you soon.

Crowdfunding, April 27, 6 pm, at the British Library

Are you looking to raise capital to finance your business? Had you considered the increasingly fashionable and innovative solution of Crowdfunding?

Join us and our guest speakers Charles Armstrong CEO, Trampoline Systems (the first technology vendor to finance its growth through equity crowdfunding) and David Smuts, Founder Elexu (a cutting edge crowdfunding platform) to explore how crowdfunding might work for you.

Green Businesses, May 13, 6 pm, at the British Library

Are you part of a growing green business and want to hear what your future may hold? Do you want to avoid the many pit falls that await unwary green businesses?

Then join Keynotes for a seminar focussing on the legal milestones that most green and ethical businesses will face. This seminar will focus on:
• financing rounds;
• commercial contracts;
• regulatory and intellectual property issue; and
• exits

Co-hosted by a clean tech legal specialist and a successful green entrepreneur this seminar will be a practical hands on guide to next steps. There will be ample time for Q and A during the seminar and refreshments will be provided afterwards.

One Day Workshop - Metaphors of Movement and Motion

Metaphors of Movement

An Intriguing Modelling Project of Problem Solving and Emotions of Change
With Andrew T. Austin

24th April 2010, Chichester, West Sussex

In this workshop, Andrew T. Austin, inspired by the work of Charles Faulkner, demonstrates how to overcome stuck states and create effective movement towards your personal goals. "Not enough people pay attention to their mode of transport," Austin explains, "in trying to move forward in life, people need to know in which direction they are heading and how far they need to go in order to reach their goal. The way they transport themselves towards that goal is vitally important and of course it is their body that is their transport."

Here's a video clip of a MoM session with a client who has weight issues, filmed in Colorado in 2009:

Clients often arrive in therapy complaining of a lack of movement in their lives, both metaphorically and literally. Common expressions of how the person feels that reflects this lack of movement include:

  • I feel stuck
  • I don't feel like I am going anywhere
  • I am stuck in a rut
  • I feel like I am going around in circles
  • I'm not making any progress at all
  • I am not moving forward
  • I feel like I am going backwards

There are many expressions that reflect a lack of movement in a person's life. In addition to this, many people lack direction:

  • I don't know where I am going
  • I don't know which way to turn next
  • I feel lost
  • I lack direction in life
  • I feel disorientated
  • I feel like I'm going the wrong way in life
  • I don't know the right way forward

Instread of paying attention to these metaphors of movement and direction, all too often in therapy there is an excessive attention paid to the kinesthetic system and the emotions. As a result we often find a person who finds themselves unable to move forward until they have the right feeling in place.

It is often noticed that many martial arts and systems of physical movement are highly philosophical in nature, an example that is well known to many people is from Aikido, where an opponents movement is not blocked, but instead is redirected. In this Metaphors of Movement workshop, Austin demonstrates the relationship between the way a person moves their body and the way a person moves through their mind and through their life.

This workshop also details the type of path on which a person moves. Life is often describe as a journey and we walk different paths. This can reflects the type of terrain, or environment, with which the person interacts. Common expressions of a person's terrain include:

  • I have fallen on hard times
  • I am on shaky ground
  • It's an uphill struggle
  • I'm skating on thin ice
  • I'm out in the open here
  • I'm at a crossroads in my life
  • I'm walking a dangerous path
  • It's a jungle out there
  • It's a long road ahead

The mode of transport is important too, and is something that is so often overlooked. for example in order to feel like we are getting somewhere in life, we may need to:

  • put our best foot forward
  • put one foot in front of the other
  • stand up for ourselves
  • take one step at a time
  • jump in with both feet
  • leap ahead of ourselves

But sometimes we may feel as though we are moving too slowly or that we are not the driver of this transport, but rather are a passenger:

  • we are racing ahead
  • we are driving this forward with great haste
  • ploughing ahead
  • it's all plain sailing
  • it's all rolling out of control
  • I'm being taken down a path I don't want to go
  • it feels as though the wheels have come off

"Wow! I have just returned from co-training with Andy Austin in the Advanced Mastery Training sponsored by Tools For Transforming. I would have gladly given up my training days to Andy so that I could have learned even more (and I can’t recall saying something like that before—ever.) When I edited Andy’s extraordinary book, The Rainbow Machine, I kept thinking, “How on earth did he know that would work?” Now I know at least some of the answers to that question...
Metaphors of Movement is a very effective—and easily learned—development of one aspect of “Clean Language” that provides a way of getting people “unstuck” with a multitude of problems—particularly useful with clients with very little access to their internal experience, such as seriously depressed clients.
Steve Andreas "

"After attending a workshop with Andy I put into practice within a week my new found skills - WOW! - amazing and rapid results. I believed I listened to my clients, I now knew that I didn't hear their movement, or lack of it!! Within 2 hours a client who had spent thousands of pounds seeking a cure from others found the right way forward, and could engage their gear. Previously everything was going wrong (and the movement metaphors were going left) and when things went the right way she found movement. We had walls that could be seen over, but couldn't be got over; scared of falling on their bum....... and literally a numb bum, that triggered instant movement, and a desire to move forward through engaging their gears. Applying a bit of filtering and a walk down a funny road and she had successfully made a way forward, specifically the right way forward. A 3 day check in for feedback and  the feedback was good - the best session ever, and the best technique I had used. A succesful outcome? Yeah - even the client left feeling good!!  I would recommend that all practitioners who want to support their clients acheive movement learn this great skill." Lesley Hoyle

I know an 8yr old who likes to start the day that way.... then say : 'It's not Topsy Turvy day..!'

Which of course means it IS Topsy Turvy day, because everything you say on Topsy Turvy day is the opposite of what you mean (thanks to the Mr Men books!).

I tried this out recently at a corporate engagement. I took the stage to conduct a 1hr interactive keynote about idea generation and I usually get the participants to do a warm up activity with their partner where they are sitting.

I said : take the next 2 minutes having a chat with your partner about your day so far, and remember, it's Topsy Turvy day. Can you imagine the mayhem? And fun?! It was a hoot - and a great way to remind ourselves what it feels like to think before we speak.

(Interested in having me speak at your next event? http://www.yvonneadele.com)

When a colleague is sharing ideas with us, we sometimes think we're doing the right thing by answering with a barrage of things they may not have thought of. In reality what we're doing is crushing their idea and stamping our own down on top of it. Simply replacing the word BUT with the word AND will add a whole new dimension to the idea!

A GIFT:: there is a special spot on the website where you can grab some very handy tools like the Ideas Culture Workbook which includes our creative thinking gamesheet. Think of it as my virtual Easter Egg for you.

Reverse Assumptions

Recently I’ve had cause to stop and admire various ideas in action. They’ve been arresting and clever. And each of them are superb examples of the sort of results you could achieve using a creative thinking technique called ‘Reverse Assumptions’ .

  1. Vending Machine which requires no coins. Use your mobile phone to make your selection from the machine, paying by credit card.
The assumption :: That you need spare change to use a vending machine.
    .
  2. chemist chain in Victoria is running a promotion for members. Members are sent a set of discount stickers including 10%, 20% and 30% which they are invited to bring into the store and stick on any item they like before they take it to the register. ‘YOU decide which items are discounted’. I am trying to track down the name of the chemist and will update this post asap.
The assumption :: That the retailer decides which items to discount.
    .
  3. 40d0d2a425351cbaefdd7c3affa2b9
Ben Elton’s new book :: Meltdown - has a big round yellow sticker on the front cover which compels you to lean in to read it. It says ::
Feeling crunched? RING BEN NOW! 1300 726 265. He’ll tell you personally why you should read Meltdown. Local call charges apply. (australia)
When you call the number you get a charming message from Ben himself chatting about the book. VERY clever.
The assumption :: That the author doesn’t market personally to the potential buyer.

How YOU can Reverse Assumptions and create an arresting idea:

  1. Rule a blank page down the middle, vertically.
  2. On the left, list all of the assumptions about your subject/challenge.
  3. On the right, next to each assumption, list the reverse of that assumption.
(ie : What is the opposite?)
  4. Then, choose the 4-5 assumption reversals you like the best. The ones you’d like to work on further. Tick or asterisk them.
  5. Now, on a blank page, list ways you could accomplish each reversal.
(ie: How could you achieve it?)

Eg: How do we get our franchisees to use the new technology tools implemented by head office?

  • Assumption: They resist any new technology
  • Reversal: They embrace new technology with gusto
  • How do we achieve this? We involve the franchisees in the creation of the new tools. We make the technology so seamless that it fits very easily into their existing daily routines.
  • Assumption: The franchisees are resistant to head office offerings
  • Reversal: The franchisees will not use any new tools unless they come from head office.
  • How do we achieve this? Poach a handful of franchisees into new roles at head office. Or appoint random franchisees amongst the outlets to act as champions.

Now, choose one idea and work it into a realistic/viable solution.

Buried in...

What we’re loving right now:

  • Futuretainment An absolute feast for the mind - a new book by my colleague Mike Walsh, futurist. He asks: 'if your children ran your business, what would they do differently?' Then reminds us that those very children are our future customers!
  • Making it Happen by Peter Sheahan. I was lucky enough to be stuck willingly in a space with Pete and a handful of others for a few hours recently and he really does have a way with words. He cuts straight to the guts with sensible advice and clever insights. This book is designed to get your ideas from concept to reality. It is for anyone who needs to sell ANYTHING.

Here’s a way to get fresh ideas – write down 3 things you wish you were good at. Then list at least 3 things about each of those topics that describe the topic. Now, think of a challenge you're facing right now, and write it down as a sentence with a question mark like:
In what ways can I re-engage with 5 old clients in the next 2 months?!
Now, go back to the list of topics and descriptions and let each one set your thinking in a new direction to find an idea to solve the challenge.
Have fun!

..may your creative juices overflow!
